Mayor Langford calls on Black Women to Tackle Crime, Other Issues, in the Community

ImageAfter the success of the first summit for African American men, "Plan 10/30: Why Am I Dying, Do You Care?” Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford has called a second summit for African American Women in the city for Friday at Fair Park Arena.

Called “Leaping Up to the Challenge,” this summit for women only is part of a series to fully develop the Plan 10/30 Initiative, where Langford has called on African Americans to empower themselves to tackle the challenges of crime and other issues that disproportionately affects their communities and the city as a whole.

"The women of this city have a fearless determination, and we need their help and support to change our community. They are the key to change," Langford said.

The summit starts 6 p.m. on Leap Year Day, Feb. 29, at Fair Park Arena. Speakers include First Lady Melva Langford, Former First Lady Rachel Arrington and City Council President Carole Smitherman.

An estimated 5,000 African American men from across metro Birmingham gathered in Fair Park Arena for the men’s summit on Feb. 8. Langford anticipates the same turn out and enthusiasm for this meeting. He is expected to announce a summit for African American families, coming in the next three weeks.

Langford said he will make these summits annual events.
